Key Steps To Embrace Your Natural Hair

Embracing your natural hair is a mindset shift, particularly for women 40 and over, who are navigating the hormonal changes brought about by perimenopause and menopause. With these changes comes, thinning hair, hair loss, dry hair and a myriad of other hair and scalp issues.

Reset in the R.E.T.A.I.N.™ Method, my signature blueprint framework, encourages and supports this mindset shift as the key to first accepting the natural hair in its present state, in order for transformation to occur.

Additionally, I have also designed a workbook, Your Protective Style Companion, which comprises of a Mindset Check-In Quiz sheet, which you fill out before protective styling, which reveals to you insights into your current mindset, to enable you to make wiser decisions to support your hair journey.

Let’s dive into the skills affirmations and empowerment explored below.

A woman is bombarded and pressured daily by her immediate environment and especially more so by social media, to look and act a certain way in order to at least feel comfortable and by extension sometimes, accepted in society. In recent years, afro- textured hair, black hair, natural hair, has received new and revamped recognition and wider acceptance. It is also for the most part celebrated.

However though, natural hair will always be for each individual a choice, whether to accept it or not. Hence, in this lesson we will focus on the premise that you have made the choice to not only accept it but to be a willing participant in caring, loving and nurturing it, enabling it to thrive.

Do you have something that you wish was different about your body, particularly, it is something that is outright noticeable to others? Is it something you were born with or caused by an incident, and you have a difficult time exposing it to the world? Do you feel scared and alone?

The embarrassment from the stares and questioning looks of people who can be curious or just downright mean, can sometimes feel overwhelming. Oh, how you wish you could just wave a magic wand, and it would disappear. Oh, how you wish you were “normal” like everyone else. They look so happy, perfect and flawless. Life is just not fair.

You look in the mirror and your imperfections are magnified many times over. You hate\dislike your facial features. Wrinkles have begun showing. Your nose is either too flat or too large, your eyes are too big or too small, your lips are too thin or too wide, your forehead is too flat or too big with hairline too far off. Wish your cheeks were plumper or slimmer. Oh yes, your teeth, you wish they were not so protruding, even a little more even or whiter maybe. As a matter of fact, you just wish you could have a total face overhaul. You would be as beautiful as so many others who just have it naturally, flawless skin and really gorgeous features.

How about your natural hair, do you also ask these Self-Limiting Questions?🤔

  • '“Is it too late for my hair to grow back?”

  • “ Am I too old to wear my natural hair out?”

  • “What if my hair never gets full again?”

  • “Can I manage this texture at my age?”

  • “Is it worth the effort now?”

  • “What if people think I’ve let myself go?”

  • “Will protective styles really work for me anymore?”

  • “Why bother learning about hair care now?”

  • “What if I fail again at growing out my natural hair and end up disappointed?”

  • “What’s the point if I am already wearing wigs anyway?”

These limiting beliefs keep you in a state of constant disempowerment and lack of faith in your ability to embrace YOU totally. Cast away these beliefs and instead begin a path to self love and confidence

Replace each Limiting Belief with powerful affirmations. ❤️

  • “It’s never too late to regrow and reconnect with my natural hair.”

  • “I wear my natural hair with pride — age only adds wisdom, not limits.”

  • “My hair has the power to heal and grow with the right care.”

  • “I am learning to love and manage my texture with grace and confidence.”

  • “Every step I take toward my hair health is an act of self-love.”

  • “Caring for my hair is not vanity — it’s a reclaiming of myself.”

  • “Protective styling can work for me when guided by intention and knowledge.”

  • “I am always worth the investment — learning about my hair is part of my healing.”

  • “This time, I am supported, informed, and empowered — and I will not give up.”

  • 10. “Wigs are a choice — not a hiding place. My hair deserves recovery.”

Now we are going to learn a skill that we can use, not only to embrace our natural hair but by extension our entire body and also anything of importance we have difficulty in embracing.

The Skill of Acceptance

A Skill is the ability to do something well. To Accept means consenting or agreeing to receive that which is offered, (in this case your natural hair, flaws and all).

Acceptance of your natural hair seemingly, should not require a skill, because being thankful for the body which we have should come naturally. However, it is not so for many women. For various reasons we have a difficult time taking ownership and presenting ourselves to the world proudly.

This therefore is why I will attempt to help you in learning to accept your natural hair, through concrete steps you can take to help build your consciousness, confidence and courage to do so.

Embracing your natural hair may seem quite difficult if you compare yourself to others and do not appreciate your natural beauty. The moment you decide to focus on you and take concrete steps to change your perspective of what “beauty” is, a whole new world of creative opportunities will naturally open up to you, enabling you to embrace, a more natural You.

Let’s begin:

Find a quiet spot without distraction. Assume a comfortable position. Relax your shoulders. Take a deep breath in. Hold for 3 seconds. Exhale fully. Repeat 3 times. Are you feeling more relaxed now?

Skill Steps:

  1. Think about what it is you like about your natural hair.

  2. Think about why you like it.

  3. Think about what you do not like about your natural hair?

  4. Think about why you do not like it.

  5. Think about anybody else you have seen or heard about who has the same challenge as you, with their natural hair.

  6. Choose to make peace with your natural hair.

  7. Choose to think and speak as many positives as possible, about your natural hair every day.

  8. Decide to write down positives every day.

  9. Accept it.

💃🏽🎉🥳Congratulations!!!! You have taken steps to accept what is naturally yours. Repeat these steps as many times as you have to, until you realize a change in the way you view your natural hair.

While however, you have a choice to choose a life that you are comfortable with, in your space and time, you should always remember that most times what is comfortable for you now may surely bring you grave discomfort in the future.

It will simply be quite repetitive of me to begin to list out for you the benefits of using natural products on your body and hair, consuming natural foods and caring for your natural environment.  Allow me rather, to remind you of your essence as a woman.

The word “essence” means the intrinsic nature or quality that determines character. A woman/human’s true essence is natural, which is what we all are derived from. We were born from and into a natural existence like all other plants, animals and environment.

We are all from that same source, natural and nature🍀. Having established that therefore, it will be unforgivable of you, to not embrace a lifestyle, which is supportive of your true essence. A lifestyle which will keep you grounded to your inner consciousness and heighten your awareness of natural.

Embracing your natural hair requires courage and determination. Simply attempting to entertain the idea, of not following the crowd and being liberated to welcome health, wealth and wellbeing into your life, is truly and naturally powerful. 🥰

Ready to take the next step? If you’re embracing your natural hair and want a clear supportive system for maintaining your protective styles, Your Protective Style Companion workbook, is for you.

It’s designed to help you stay consistent, track your routines and keep your hair healthy while protective styling. Start protecting your hair and scalp with purpose.
